The sexual inducer of Volvox carteri: purification, chemical characterization and identification of its gene.
The sexual inducer of Volvox carteri f. nagariensis is a glycoprotein and one of the most potent biological effector molecules known. It is synthesized by sperm cells and converts asexually growing males and females to the sexual pathway. Until now, large-scale production of the inducer was made impossible by an inherent biological ;switch' mechanism, the spontaneous self-induction of asexually...
متن کاملPurification and partial characterization of a glycoprotein sexual inducer from Volvox carteri.
A method is described for the isolation and purification of the sexual inducer produced by male colonies of the colonial green alga Volvox carteri. The procedure yields a highly purified preparation of the inducer. The biologically active principal is demonstrated to be a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 32,000.
متن کاملSexual Induction in Volvox Carteri
The study of the dependence of reactions on the concentration of various compounds is often of great value in determining reaction mechanisms . In chemical kinetics, it is often found that, according to van't Hoff's rule, the order of dependence of a reaction on the concentration of some compound involved in that reaction is equal to the number of molecules of the compound involved in each reac...
متن کاملA gender-specific retinoblastoma-related protein in Volvox carteri implies a role for the retinoblastoma protein family in sexual development.
Here, we describe the cloning and characterization of RETINOBLASTOMA-RELATED PROTEIN1 (RBR1) from the green alga Volvox carteri. RBR1 expression increases substantially during embryogenesis and in response to the sex-inducer glycoprotein, but it decreases significantly under heat stress. While RBR1 is expressed in gonidia (asexual reproductive cells) and embryos, the largest proportion of RBR1 ...
متن کاملTwo Different Rickettsial Bacteria Invading Volvox carteri
BACKGROUND Bacteria of the family Rickettsiaceae are principally associated with arthropods. Recently, endosymbionts of the Rickettsiaceae have been found in non-phagotrophic cells of the volvocalean green algae Carteria cerasiformis, Pleodorina japonica, and Volvox carteri. Such endosymbionts were present in only C. cerasiformis strain NIES-425 and V. carteri strain UTEX 2180, of various strai...
